BMW India has started teasing its petrol-electric hybrid i8 as speculations are rife that it is going to be unveiled at the coming 2014 Indian Auto Expo. It has released some images of it on its official facebook page and recently, it even released a teaser video of it, putting all speculations to an end and confirming its India launch at the Delhi Motor Show.
The BMW i8 was displayed as a production guise at the Franfurt Motor show which took place in September 2013. As evident of the fact that BMW India has allocated only 7-8 units of this hybrid supercar, its deliveries for the Indian customers would only commence by last quarter of 2014 or in early 2015. Apparently, first year production of i8 has been already sold out.
BMW i8 is powered by a petrol engine in accordance with an electric motor. The former is a 3-cylinder, 1.5-litre, twin turbocharging, mill that generates 231bhp of top power and 320Nm of top torque while the latter has the capability to churn out a maximum power output of 131bhp and a peak torque of 250Nm. The gasoline engine transfers the power to front wheels whereas the electric motos powers the rear wheels. When the petrol powertrain and electric motor are integrated together, then it belts out an enormous power output of 362 hp and 570 Nm of highest torque. And, with no surprises, this mammoth power allows it to touch the 100kmph barrier from standstill in a mere 4.5 seconds. It also compels it to touch a top speed of 250kmph while maintaing a astounding fuel economy of 40kmpl. It is likely to be priced at Rs. 1.5 Crore
