Mahindra and Ssangyong combinedly developing a crossover for India

Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) is working hard on a new addition to its product portfolio, and in doing so, the company has tied up with Ssangyong. The combined project is termed as S102, which will be the first ever vehicle to be launched based on Mahindra and Ssangyong joint platform.

The S102 is basically based on Ssngyong's Korean product X100 platform. While the crossover is expected to arrive by late 2015 or the beginning of 2016. It will compete against the successfully running Ford Ecosport in India. Also it may affect the high demand running for SUV like Renault Duster in the local market.

Interestingly, the new S102 crossover could come with a 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol motor, which is again developed jointly by both auto companies. Commenting on the powertrain development Dr. Goenka, Excutive Director & President- Automotive & Farm Equipment Sector, said, “ We are jointly developing an engine family comprising of six different engines, but the big one is the new product based on X100 platform. I think people, begin to see the value of it and that will only grow.” He also added saying that the process of developing the engine will take place in India and Korea.

Hyundai Grand i10 Sedan spied ahead of its launch

Hyundai Grand i10 sedan, just a few days away from its much anticipated Indian debut, was spied as a test mule. It has been caught testing several times on the Indian roads and as clearly visible, Hyundai is not leaving any stone unturned to make it a completely refined vehicle with performance level at its best.
In the images, one can easily witness the VTVT badge, darkened B-Pillar and an indicator bulb above the wheel. While the interiors of Grand i10 hatchback are retained in this new sedan including the dashboard and seats. Rumors are also doing the round that Hyundai may also introduce an automatic variant of this sedan with the company's traditional 4-speed automatic transmission, which is already doing duties to its younger sibling, Grand i10 hatchback.

The company would offer the Grand i10 sedan with the same 1.2-liter Kappa VTVT engine; thus retaining the engine because of its decent performance in the Grand i10 hatchback. Most probably, Hyundai will incorporate its conventional five-speed manual gearbox with the engine due to its cost-effectiveness. The Grand i10 sedan is speculated to be making its debut just before the inception of the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, most favorably on Feb 4, 2014.

EXCLUSIVE: Mercedes-Benz to launch the GLA during festive season

Mercedes-Benz has announced it will launch 10 new products in India this year and it has already brought in its flagship model, the new S-Class in the first week of 2014. The other nine products include mostly AMG, however the biggest launch of the year for the German manufacturer will be the GLA, which will be the compact SUV. The CLA is likely to get pushed to 2015 as Mercedes-Benz might focus more on the GLA than the CLA.

The GLA is slated to be launched during the festive season around September-October and this will be the new volume seller for Mercedes-Benz. The X1 and the Q3 were the game changers for BMW and Audi as they increased the volumes for both of them. The GLA is believed to do the same for Mercedes-Benz too. This is one reason, why the company is focusing on introducing the GLA and the CLA launch might just get pushed.

The GLA will come with a petrol and diesel engine option. The petrol will be a 1.6-litre turbo petrol that will produce between 122-156bhp of power. The diesel will be a 2.2-litre that will churn between 109bhp to 136bhp. We aren’t sure of which all engines will be available, but mostly the 4MATIC (all-wheel drive) could be skipped for the Indian market. These engines will come mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Numerous driving assistance systems offer support in the GLA and reduce the driver's workload. Standard-fit features for the SUV include ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection and radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive Brake Assist, which now helps to protect against collisions from a speed of only 7 km/h.

This feature combines with DISTRONIC PLUS (€1023.40) to become COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. This incorporates an additional function: when a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 200 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 30 km/h, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 20 km/h.

Celerio and iV-4 SUV concept to be Maruti's Show-stopper at 2014 Auto Expo

Like other carmakers, India's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki is also doing its final preparations for the 2014 Delhi Motor Show. With its new technology and cars, the company aims to make a strong impression on the visitors at the Pan-India event. The Indo-Japanese brand will unveil a couple of exciting products and facelifts of their existing models. One of the most anticipated car of the year is Maruti's new compact hatch, Celerio, which will replace the A-Star and Estilo in the market. This model will have its world premiere at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo and it will replace the Alto worldwide.

The Celerio gets the same 1.0-litre K-Series petrol engine that also does duty in the Alto K10 and the A-Star. This model will be made available in two transmission options- a five-speed manual and an automated manual gearbox. The Celerio will be the first car in the Indian car market to feature automated manual transmission, which will remove the clutch pedal from the car. It offers an automatic transmission feel to driver and is reportedly 5 per cent more fuel efficient than the regular manual version. Driver can shift the gears either sequentially or fully automatically. It is expected to cost little higher than the regular manual car, however the hatchback will be cheaper than the automatic version.

At the 2012 Auto Show, Maruti showcased the XA Alpha compact SUV concept, however the production version of the SUV is not ready to be unveiled this year's event. Interestingly, the company won't disappoint the visitors as it will present a larger concept, iV-4, which was recently unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Ford Classic sedan to get cheaper

After witnessing an increase in demand for sub-4 metre and entry level sedans, Ford India launched the Classic entry-level model in the country. However, the company is still selling both the Fiesta and Classic, which has opened a space to bring in the new Fiesta facelift in the market. According to some media reports, Ford Classic will soon get a significant price reduction to counter the increasing competition in the popular entry-level sedan segment. The prices are expected to be reduced by around Rs. 70,000 to 1 lakh, which make its starting price about Rs. 5 lakh.

Maruti Swift Dzire and Honda Amaze are currently dominating the entry-level sedan segment, while Ford Classic and Chevrolet Sail only contributed to a limited extent. Moreover, the carmakers like Hyundai and Tata Motors will also introduce their compact sedans in the market in near future, which will add more fuel to this competition. If reports to be believed, Nissan India could also launch the price cut version of Sunny sedan, as the company is planning to introduce the facelifted Sunny at the Auto Show.

Ford Classic is just the re-badged old Fiesta, which was launched way back in 2005. Currently, it is the oldest sedan in its league sold in the market. It is being offered in both petrol and diesel guise. While the petrol model gets the 1.6-litre DuraTec engine that develops 101bhp and 146Nm of torque, the diesel version is powered by a 1.4-litre TDCi engine producing 68bhp and 160Nm of torque.

It is expected that the new prices for the Classic will come into effect by the end of this month. However, it is still unclear what other changes the sedan will get. We expect it to be priced around Rs. 5 lakh for the entry level petrol model, while the diesel model is likely to be tagged around Rs. 6 lakh.

Worldwide Sales of Toyota Hybrids crosses 6 Million mark

Toyota Motor Corporation announces that cumulative global sales of its hybrid vehicles topped the 6 million unit mark as of December 31, 2013, reaching 6.072 million units1. The latest million-unit milestone was achieved in the fastest time yet for Toyota, taking just nine months.

Based on its belief that environment-friendly vehicles can only truly have a positive impact if they are widely used, Toyota has endeavored to encourage the mass-market adoption of hybrid vehicles.

As of this month, Toyota sells 24 hybrid passenger car models and one plug-in hybrid model in approximately 80 countries and regions around the world. Furthermore, within the next two years, Toyota will launch a total of 15 new hybrid vehicles worldwide. Toyota will continue augmenting its product lineup even further and increasing the number of countries and regions where it sells hybrid vehicles.

Toyota calculates that as of December 31, 2013, Toyota hybrid vehicles2 have resulted in approximately 41 million fewer tons3 of CO2 emissions—believed to be a cause of global warming—than would have been emitted by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance. Toyota also estimates that its hybrid vehicles have saved approximately 15 million kiloliters of gasoline compared to the amount used by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size.

In August 1997 in Japan, Toyota launched the “Coaster Hybrid EV” and launched the “Prius”—the world’s first mass-produced hybrid passenger vehicle—in December. Since then, Toyota hybrid vehicles have received tremendous support from consumers around the world.

Toyota has positioned hybrid technologies that enable the use of different fuel combinations, including the component technologies necessary for development of various environment-friendly cars, as core environmental technologies for the twenty-first century. Toyota therefore plans to continue working to raise performance, reduce costs, and expand its product lineup—including that of non-hybrid environment-friendly vehicles—to create vehicles that are popular with consumers.

Jeep to delay Cherokee and Wrangler India launch

We reported earlier that Fiat will launch its Jeep brand in the country at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, where the company will introduce its Wrangler and Cherokee. Now, it seems like Jeep could delay the launch of its cars in India. It will be for the second time when Jeep has delayed the launch; the company had earlier planned to introduce their vehicles by the end of 2013. Now, it looks like both of these SUVs will not make their way to Indian car market anytime sooner.

However, the good news is that the company didn't deny their plans of launching the vehicles in India, in fact, they are waiting for the market conditions to improve a bit. Jeep has an exciting range of compact and large SUVs to be launched, but aims to make a grand arrival in the market. According to media reports, Jeep is aiming to introduce Wrangler and Cherokee in India with aggressive pricing, which will make it to compete well against the likes of Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz and others. The deficit in the value of Rupee against Dollar has affected Jeep's strategy, and now they are waiting for a right time to launch these much awaited SUVs.

Audi showcases its new tablet

Audi has applied its world-renowned flair for technological innovation to the development of a new portable tablet that could open up a wealth of new possibilities for networking between the car, its driver and the Internet.

Shown in prototype form at this month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, USA, the Audi Smart Display slickly combines the latest technology from the consumer electronics world with the robustness and reliability of a component designed specifically for automotive use. With a 10.2-inch full-HD display encased in brushed aluminium, the portable tablet can facilitate access to, and operation of, the car’s infotainment system, but its capabilities also extend far beyond this.

Through a secure and stable WLAN interface, and via the very familiar Android operating system, the Smart Display can connect seamlessly with the car and enrich it with the state-of-the-art computing and graphics power of its Nvidia Tegra 40 processor.

Passengers in the front or rear seats can use the touchscreen to control the radio, media and navigation systems, and also call up data on the car’s operating status. Equally importantly they can also enjoy access to the Internet at optimal Long Term Evolution (LTE) speeds – which significantly outpace more familiar broadband connections - via the Audi connect system.

Via the Smart Display passengers have access to more than 950,000 apps plus movies, music, audio books and eBooks through Google Play, the Android app store.

The unit’s internal storage serves as an audio and video jukebox, but the Audi Smart Display can also receive video from the MMI navigation plus system. One notable advantage of its portability is that a film that could not be watched in full on a particular journey can be resumed back at home in the living room at the exact point where it was paused in the car.

The Smart Display uses the Audi sound system to play back sound in perfect quality. External headphones can also be connected via Bluetooth or a standard headphone jack. The Smart Display also supports NFC (near field communication) technology, making it particularly easy to connect to Bluetooth headphones and mobile devices in general. Thanks to its integrated camera the Smart Display can also be used for Skype video calls.

The Audi Smart Display was systematically developed for use in cars – it can easily withstand extremes of temperature and its robust hardware makes it crash-proof – but it also means that for the first time the innovative technology that is synonymous with the Vorsprung durch Technik brand can now touch many other areas of life.

Audi Crossover Concept revealed; a new member to Q-Series?

The German luxury carmaker has revealed the first set of pictures of the Audi Crossover concept, which is scheduled to make its debut at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show. The company had teased the sketches of the concept in December and with this latest set of images, it is being speculated to be the Audi's upcoming Q1 crossover.
The crossover will be an electric hybrid as it features an 'e-tron' emblem. The front facade looks aggressive, thanks to its sharp headlights and a prominent Audi grille with horizontal slats. At the rear, a roof spoiler on the tailgate and a twin exhaust adds sportiness to the two door concept. With a wheelbase of 2.51 meters (8.23 ft), the show car − painted in Ice Blue − is 4.20 meters (13.78 ft) long, 1.85 meters (6.07 ft) wide and 1.41 meters (4.63 ft) tall. The vehicle gets plastic cladding all-around, sporty wheel arches and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside the cabin, the Crossover Concept has plenty of room for four passengers. In front, the narrow sport seats give the driver and front passenger optimal body support; they feature highly contoured lateral panels and integrated head restraints, while cushioned pads support the thighs in quick driving through curves. An easy entry function makes it easier to enter the rear seating area. When the rear seatback is folded down, a cargo area with a level cargo floor is created, in which there is space for rather large sports equipment.

The dashboard of the concept looks identical to the 'Virtual Cockpit' of the 2015 Audi TT. The steering wheel and digital instrument cluster lie in a single direct line of sight. It features a TFT display with its 12.3-inch screen, which gives all key information in top quality 3D graphics and offers a variety of modes. In the classic view, the power-meter for the plug-in hybrid drive system and the speedometer are in the foreground, while in Infotainment mode elements such as the large navigation map dominate, and in Sport mode the tachometer is prominently displayed. Another forward-looking feature in the show car is the Audi phone box, which links the driver's cell phone to the vehicle electrical system and can inductively charge it as necessary.

Under the hood, the Audi Show Car gets the 2.0-litre TFSI engine that churns out a maximum power output of 292bhp and 380Nm of peak torque. It operates together with a disc-shaped electric motor via a decoupling clutch; the electric motor develops 53.6bhp of power and 270Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a six-speed e-S tronic dual clutch transmission.

This Mini SUV will be the Volkswagen's direct answer to the likes of Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and upcoming Maruti's compact SUV. `1

For the Indian buyers, the Taigun is expected to get the 1.2-litre 4-cylinder TSI petrol engine. This engine will be mated to either six-speed manual or the DSG automatic, which transmits power to front wheels of the SUV. It will also get the diesel engine, which is likely to be the same 1.2-litre engine producing 74bhp. The Volkswagen Taigun share most of its styling cues from its SUV siblings, the Tiguan and Touareg, as it is evident in the rugged side panels, underbody protection and a practical roof rails with LED spotlights. The concept model featured the large 17-inch alloys, however the production version model will see a smaller sized tyre.

The exact launch date of the Taigun SUV is yet to be known, but we expect it to hit the Indian shores by the 2015-16.
